About the Roundtable

In April 2024, the US Senate shocked many with a rare bipartisan agreement in overwhelming support of a TikTok ban that was signed in rapid succession by President Biden. Though the exact outcome remains unclear and continued legal action will likely stretch out the process, the looming ban has rightfully ignited impassioned discussion across scholars, creators, journalists, politicians, and everyday users. What do reactions to this ban reveal about the role of TikTok in the social and economic lives of users? In what ways has the app become a stand-in for geopolitical concerns around China? What does the threat of disappearance reveal about precarity in the platform era? Who stands to benefit from a TikTok ban? Who stands to lose?
