  • Doctoral Student

By reading copyright law against the grain, Bianca’s work centers the labor dynamics underlying the use of generative AI, especially as they affect wage workers with marginalized identities.

Bianca Perez was raised in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts in both Communication and Media Studies. While in Boulder, Bianca researched the political economy of TikTok as it relates to the promotion of eating disorders with hashtags like #WhatIEatInADay. At the same time, she completed multiple internships in social media marketing that strategically used digital media to further cement exclusionary norms of health and fitness. These intertangled, and at times ambivalent, experiences led Bianca to maintain a commitment to critical studies in her own research. Bianca also spent many years working in the service industry as a busser, waitress, and cashier to afford university. Her time as a wage worker naturally led her to blend labor dynamics with the political economy of digital media. Bianca now researches copyright law and labor in an age of generative AI. She presented her honors thesis “What is Labor in an Age of Generative AI” at IAMCR, Christchurch, New Zealand 2024.
