Pickard Talks About the Battle for Media Democracy on WHYY

Victor Pickard at Annenberg School for Communication ASC UPenn

Professor Victor Pickard was a guest on the National Public Radio program “Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane” on January 12 to talk about his new book, America’s Battle for Media Democracy: The Triumph of Corporate Libertarianism and the Future of Media Reform.

He discussed how efforts at media reform in the years following World War II ultimately failed, and what the lessons from history can teach us about media in the future. Noting that commercial radio in the 1940s was roughly the same age as the internet is today he explained how the governmentback then grappled with what the role of media is in a democratic society; an argument that continues to this day.
